Brigadier General States Rights Gist. He was born in 1831 in South Carolina, was a lawyer and a brigadier general in the South Carolina Militia. During the Secession Crisis of 1860-61, he was an adviser to the governor of South Carolina. During the War for Southern Independence, he served as an adviser to Gen. Joseph Johnston at the First Battle of Manassas; led a South Carolina brigade under Johnston in the Vicksburg Campaign; and was with his brigade at the Battle of Chickamauga, the Atlanta Campaign and was killed in action at the Battle of Franklin, TN Nov. 30, 1864. Gist was a brave, competent and reliable combat commander.
