Major Richard W. "Dick" Dowling, hero of the Battle of Sabine Pass, Texas, Sept. 8, 1863. He and the his fellow heroes of the Jefferson Davis Guard, Co. F, 1st Texas Heavy Artillery, defeated an armada of Federal navy gunboats and transports and 5,000 invasion troops. Dowling and his 42 men were able to save Houston and Beaumont from the horrors of invasion and destruction, which was the fate of many Southern cities and towns in the War for Southern Independence.
